3.1 million tourists visited Costa Rica in 2019. Where did they come from?

According to the Costa Rican government, there were 3,139,008 international visitors to Costa Rica in 2019, and more than half of these (1,666,571) were from North America. More than 1.3 million of these North Americans were from the United States, but as for Europe, Germany narrowly beat out the United Kingdom for visitors to Costa Rica– 80,580 versus 78,562.

These arrivals from the United States marked a 5.5% increase over 2018, and Canada’s 234,621 visitors in 2019 was an even more significant increase over 2018 at an 8.1% jump.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant decrease in tourism across the world. Nonetheless, Costa Rica remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Latin America, famous for its biodiversity and natural beauty.
